How to Get Xbox 360 HDMI video and Digital Optical 5.1 Surround Sound

Summary
If you are lucky enough (!) to own an Xbox 360 Arcade or an Xbox 360 Premium instead of the Xbox 360 Elite, then you are probably wondering how to get an HDMI video signal going to your TV and a digital 5.1 surround audio signal going to your HiFi (via the optical cable, of course)! In any other situation, of course, you'd simply plug in the fat adaptor that has the built-in optical socket, and then plug in the HDMI lead next to it, but Microsoft designed the fat plug to be so fat it blocks your access to the HDMI socket, which means you're forced to choose - "Optical or HDMI?"!
Well, it is definitely possible, but not without a potentially trashed £15 cable, i warn you (although this depends on your ability to remove a plastic casing without damaging the plug inside!).
What I Did To Get it Working
First of all, I purchased an Xbox 360 VGA lead (that's the one with the fat plug on one end, and the PC-style VGA 15-pin D-SUB monitor adaptor with Left and Right RCA phono audio connectors on the other end), a standard optical lead and a standard HDMI lead.
NOTE: This solution probably works with other "fat-plugged" Xbox 360 cables, but i can't guarantee it. One of the guys in my local "Game" store said it definitely does not work with the component cable, but i can't comment on that as i've not tried it.
I then very carefully broke the plastic housing off the fat plug on the end of the VGA cable (the end that goes into the Xbox 360) and carefully wrapped some sticky tape around it to stop all the guts falling out and the internal wires breaking.
NOTE: If you do this, be especially careful of the three very thin wires going to the optical socket - they were very fragile in my plug, and looked like they were going to snap off at any moment!
Once this was done, the rest was easy! I carefully plugged in the now "uncased" fat Xbox plug into the Xbox, and plugged the HDMI lead into the socket next to it.
I then plugged the optical lead into the socket in the back of the uncased fat Xbox plug, and plugged the other end of the optical lead into my AV receiver.
I then plugged the other end of the HDMI lead into my TV and turned it all on!
I must say - it works like a dream!
